How are walnut export prices formed? How to sell a nut for more?

Almost all walnuts grown and processed in Ukraine are exported. Walnut from the population passes from one to several buyers before it reaches the exporter and the foreign buyer itself. Export prices differ from the cost of purchasing nuts from the population and there are a number of reasons for this:

1. All exported walnuts must comply with international quality and packaging standards, as well as have a package of documents.
2. Export volumes are estimated in tons, as the walnut is purchased by large international companies. Export-import clearance has its own cost and it is more profitable to process one large cargo than several small ones. The same applies to the cost of delivery in terms of 1 kg.
3. In most cases, international companies produce an order for a certain type of product, which is prescribed in the contract. For example, they can buy a walnut in the shell only with a caliber of 28 mm or only a wheat kernel, ¼. Therefore, before export, walnuts in shell and / or kernels go through a series of sorting processes – sizing, sorting into fractions, sorting by color, moisture testing, as well as packaging.
4. Storage of a walnut, especially a shelled one, requires not only space, but also certain conditions, which also applies to financial costs.

The main reasons that affect the cost of the export price on one side are listed. On the other hand, the price is formed by the external market, namely, competition in the international arena (the quality and cost of walnuts from suppliers of other producing countries) and the supply/demand ratio.

In order to sell a walnut more expensively, it is necessary to carry out the maximum sorting of the walnut and go to exporters. However, it is important to understand that exporters work with large quantities of walnuts. The larger the batch and the better sorted the kernel or inshell nut, the higher the price will be offered by the buyer.

With small volumes of inshell walnuts and kernels, it is possible to team up with other walnut growers and processors, form large batches and sell the walnut directly to exporters.
