How to make money on walnuts in 2022?

Many articles have been written about the high profitability of the walnut business, and it already seemed that the peak of the popularity of this type of business was behind us. But that’s not the case at all.

Firstly, industrial orchards that were planted several years ago are just beginning to bear fruit in Ukraine. Support for gardeners from the state continues and the areas of gardens increase every year. Therefore, in the coming years, an increase in the volume of quality walnuts on the market is expected, and these are new opportunities for processors and exporters.

What about today’s realities in which we find ourselves due to the military aggression of the neighboring country? Today, the walnut business can be attributed to one of the most stable and reliable, because the walnut grows and yields every year. More than 85% of all Ukrainian walnuts are exported, and payment for it is made in foreign currency. Accordingly, with the growth of the dollar or euro within the country, the cost of the walnut also grows in hryvnia.

Options for making money on a walnut in 2022:

• Having your own garden – you have a constant income, it can be both a passive seasonal income and the main direction. You can sell the walnut immediately after harvest or already washed and dried, you can also process and sell the kernel. Walnut volumes do not matter. Often, the owners of walnut orchards, in addition to their own walnut, gradually buy up and process walnut from the population.
• Purchase of walnuts from the population. It is easy to start a business from scratch and with minimal investment. You can buy a walnut through bulletin boards, thematic groups in instant messengers, you can open a place for purchases at the local market or travel to villages and buy directly from people’s yards. Then larger batches are formed and sold. Earnings consist of the difference between the purchase price and the selling price.

You can increase your earnings by performing pre-sale processing of walnuts – this is cleaning from the remnants of the green peel, drying the walnuts, sizing and packing the walnuts in bags. Each process increases the value at which the walnut can be sold.

To make money on buying / selling walnuts, you need:
1. Place of storage of the walnut;
2. Vehicle for transportation, if it will be a purchase in the villages;
3. Equipment to increase the value of the walnut – walnut peeler, dryer and calibrator.

• Walnut processing. Walnut can be processed both manually in small volumes and on an industrial scale.

For small volumes, improvised tools or convenient mechanical nutcrackers are used. Often seasonal walnut processing is a family business, where one person splits the walnut, others sort and sort the kernel. Such a business can be expanded by hiring additional people. The result is income with minimal investment.

For a larger volume, industrial equipment is used. This can be a minimal set of equipment – a nutcracker and sorting equipment, or an industrial line.

• Purchase of an already purified kernel from the population. Unlike buying walnuts in shell, the kernel takes up less space, but it is more demanding on storage conditions. Earnings also consist in the purchase of a walnut kernel in small volumes, the formation and sale of large lots. You can increase earnings on buying/selling the kernel by sorting the kernel into fractions and by color.

To make money on buying / selling the kernel, you need:
1. A place to store a walnut;
2. Equipment to cost increase of the kernel – a vibrating sieve for sorting the kernel into fractions – 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and a photo separator for sorting by color.

• Walnut export. Entrepreneurs who already have experience in international trade can export walnuts to Turkey, Britain, Romania and other EU countries.
  The attractiveness of the walnut business is that you can start with any volume – it can even be a hundred kilograms, which a person will process gradually, and having already studied all the subtleties, he easily scales the business. Also, the advantages include the fact that this is work “for oneself”, there is an opportunity to develop your own business or expand an existing one.
